After the NSW thrashing in State of Origin, some were dusty but never the less everyone was itching to ski. The weather forecast was good, it had snowed overnight, runs were groomed, all lifts open, Sid was up and we were raring to go.
Birdie had practiced the chain process – we could not have been more prepared. We get to the turn off and it was a bit confusing on whether we needed chains, so a quick check on the website – said no chains. Phew! The higher we got the lower the clouds seemed, we were directed to Car park 4 – mountain fairly busy. John decided to be a gentleman and drop us at the base station so that we didn’t have to lug our gear, we hadn’t got 30m past the turn off to the car park and the car lost traction. Skid, slip slide and slowly getting closer and closer to the snow drift up the mountain – which in my opinion we would not have got out of. So out we all hopped and we 5 plus the car park guy had to push the car to give it some traction and safely drove to the car park.
By this time the visibility is so low and Birdie and John had skied in these conditions yesterday and it wasn’t fun. We were here so we went to investigate and there were all sorts of theories. One person said that it wasn’t going to clear as there was no wind to blow the clouds away, someone else said that the good news was that there was no wind as winds and a southerly keeps the clouds on the mountain – so it was anyones guess.
Wait for this… Jen was so keen to try and practice that she put her ski boots and skis on and she practiced her newly honed skills. Birdie gave her a lesson and we found a nice gentle slope where Jen would ski down (slowly at first) and then we would pull her back up. Yes you heard it right, Jen held onto the ski poles and we would run up the hill with Jen in tow. By the end of the hour Jen skied parallel with turns. So proud of her and what was great is that she had fun.
We then came home, did some shopping as Sid was cooking chook for dinner, John, Jen and I went to Bunnings to buy wood and stuff for shelving and buy some household goods for the house. Jen and I put up the shelves – so what started out as a disappointment was fun and productive.
