NSW Open Practice Round (from a newbie’s perspective!)

I think it is fair to say this professional world is a whole new experience for us amateurs..

For the practice round I had the opportunity to play with some great players and learn about how to get the most information out of a practice round. I played with Sarah Kemp, who is a big favourite for the tournament as she has had some great results lately, and no wonder with a swing like hers! Was great to watch and see how the professionals do it!!

I also played with Joanna Klatten, a French professional who was in the top 15 of the LET Order of Merit in 2013. She is such a great ball striker and such a funny personality which made the round much more enjoyable and helped to calm the nerves. Sarah kept commenting “Jo, she will never want to be pro if she thinks we are ALL crazy!”

My coach was walking round with me and he organised the game with Sarah and Jo, which had the added bonus of getting some of the nerves out the way playing with some big names!! The relief when I hit it straight down the middle of the fairway off the first was huge but I ended up with a triple bogey somehow – it’s funny what nerves do to you.

I felt like I was putting great which was a nice change but I assume they are going to make the greens a lot faster for Friday – should be a good challenge.

Talking of challenges… the yardage book they gave us took me about half an hour to work out where I was on the picture on the first. Lets just say there are lots of numbers meaning nothing to my brain. At least they offered them in yards or metres so for once I’m not converting everything from metres to yards!

Tomorrow for the first round I am playing with Sally Watson, who is Scottish and from near St. Andrews. Funnily enough she is actually a member of the club I am a member of in St. Andrews so should be good to play with her. She has just recently turned professional and I look forward to watching and learning!
